On the morning of May 9, the eleventh science popularization lecture of the Chongqing Tour series event "Science and China - Thousands of Academicians, Thousands of Science Popularization" kicked off at Jinfeng Laboratory. This event specially invited Ning Ke, a full-time researcher at Jinfeng Laboratory, an internationally renowned expert in stem cells and gene therapy, a tenured professor at the University of Sheffield in the UK, and a visiting and lecture professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, to be the keynote speaker. With the theme of "Gene Therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy", a cutting-edge science feast that was both professional and interesting was presented to more than 60 youth science and technology counselors on site.

“Gene therapy is a scientific revolution from 'no cure' to 'precise repair'. ”At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Ning Ho quickly drew the audience's attention to the frontiers of life sciences with this powerful statement.
With many years of experience in the field of brain trauma and neuropathy, Professor Ning Ke used vivid cases as a guide and popular language as a guide to progressively analyze the pathogenesis, typical symptoms, traditional treatment methods of spinal muscular atrophy, as well as the latest research breakthroughs and unique advantages of gene therapy in this field, making the originally obscure medical knowledge easy to understand.
The atmosphere of the interactive question-and-answer session was lively, and the youth science and technology counselors actively asked questions about the daily prevention of spinal muscular atrophy, the efficacy and potential risks of gene therapy, and other issues. “How to prevent spinal muscular atrophy in daily life? ”“Are there any side effects of gene therapy? ”Faced with these concerns, Professor Ning Ho patiently answered them one by one, and his professional and meticulous response won rounds of applause from the audience. When talking about "how to improve the scientific literacy of teenagers", Professor Ning Ke particularly emphasized: "Youth science and technology counselors are disseminators of scientific knowledge and enlighteners of scientific thinking. Their professional level directly determines the quality of science education for teenagers. Only by first improving the scientific literacy and teaching capabilities of science and technology counselors can we better guide young people to explore the scientific world and improve their scientific literacy. ”

“Since the launch of the "Science and China - Thousands of Academicians, Thousands of Science Popularization" activities in Chongqing, many academicians and experts have been invited to government agencies, universities, middle schools and primary schools to carry out science popularization activities, creating a strong atmosphere of talking about science, loving science, learning science and applying science in the whole society. The event was hosted by the Science Popularization and Education Working Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, organized by the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Stem Cell Biology Branch of the Chinese Society of Cell Biology, and the Chongqing Science and Technology Association, and co-organized by the First Affiliated Hospital of the Army Medical University, Jinfeng Laboratory, and the Chongqing High-tech Zone Science and Technology Association.
